Three teens caught on tape vandalizing Rockton gazebo

Three teenage boys were arrested Monday for allegedly damaging dozens of wooden spindles at the Settler's Park gazebo over the past few months.

Officials said a video camera recorded the boys in the act of damaging the spindles, which are valued at more than $500. Gordy Nygren of Rockton's Public Works Department said the boys, ages 13 to 15, were caught on tape Sunday.

The vandalism, which occurred over several months, had stumped police, who decided to use video surveillance, Police Chief Steve Dickson said. He praised his officers for solving a crime that often goes unsolved.

The village will seek restitution for the damage, and Dickson said the Winnebago County state's attorney's office will decide what charges the boys will face.
