Illinois report card: Illini vs. Golden Gophers

Offense: A

It comes with an asterisk: Minnesota's defense is the worst in the nation. But quarterback Juice Williams' 174 yards passing in the first half was better than all but three games in his career.

Defense: B

The Illini had trouble stopping wide receiver Ernie Wheelwright. The big receiver burned Illinois defensive backs and caught a 15-yard touchdown pass in the first half.

Special teams: A

Illini place-kicker Jason Reda is having a big senior season. He made three field goals, including a 51-yarder that would have been good from 61.

Overall: A

Perhaps the biggest improvement this year by the Illini was avoiding bad losses. If the worst loss this season came at Iowa, that's not too bad. The Hawkeyes are one win from gaining bowl eligibility. Meanwhile, Illinois set up a big game at Ohio State next Saturday.
