Jefferson students hail Principal Jackson's return

Jefferson High School students this morning hailed the return of Kenneth Jackson as their principal.

Students said Jackson will restore order to the school and return a sort of kind discipline they had grown to appreciate last year.

Junior Nicholas Pauley, 17, said Jackson is considered a disciplinarian but treats students with respect.

"It's better to have him here because most kids, if they are in trouble, he helps them with their problems, not just punish them," Pauley said.

Sophomore Rebecca Botti, 15, agreed and said Jackson is a good principal.

"I'm excited to have him back," Botti said. "He is strict on his policies, but he (respects) students."

Jackson had been suspended pending a grade change investigation from last school year. It was then discovered his Illinois certification had expired. Armed with a new certificate and the blessing of the Rockford School Board, Jackson returned to the school this morning for the first time since early September.

After an 8 a.m. meeting with Interim Superintendent Linda Hernandez at district headquarters, Jackson arrived at Jefferson around 9:45 a.m. escorted by three supporters. The supporters identified themselves as Rockford residents and appeared to serve as security.

Jackson entered the building saying he has work to do.

"I'm excited to see my kids," Jackson said.

Giles Jefferson, one of the men escorting Jackson, said the principal's return is best for the students of Jefferson and Rockford.

"Dr. Jackson has a true and genuine heart for educating all kids," Jefferson said.
