Elderly driver in fatal Brockton Hospital crash loses license

The 76-year-old woman who admitted crashing into Brockton Hospital Monday, killing two people, had her driver's license revoked today, according to the state Registry of Motor Vehicles.

The driver, Jane Berghold of Rockland, also had been held responsible for one accident previously, her driving record shows.

Berghold told The Enterprise on Monday that she tried to brake outside the Brockton Hospital radiation therapy center but said her car did not stop. The gray Oldsmobile Delta 88 smashed into the entrance of the hospital's radiation department, coming to a stop inside the reception area.

Two people died from their injuries - Dr. Mark Vasa, 58, of Norwell, the chief of radiation therapy at Brockton Hospital, and Susan Plante, 59, of East Bridgewater, a secretary at the hospital.

Three other hospital employees were also injured.

Berghold had a surchargeable accident in December 1990, according to her record at the Registry of Motor Vehicles. Surchargeable accidents ware those in which a driver is ruled at fault or for which the driver's insurance company pays out more than $500 in claims, according to the Registry.

The radiation department was closed today but was expected to reopen Wednesday, hospital officials said.
