THIS WEEK IN WEIRD: Check out the bizarre stories coming from GateHouse papers this week. IN / news
CUBANS IN AMERICA: Pepe Gonzalez and his two children were let out of Cuba when he won one of the 20,000 visas the U.S. permits for Cubans. But his wife, Carmen, is a medical doctor. Cuba said she couldn't leave. So, Pepe and the kids came here on a plane from Havana on April 17. They were trying through political channels to get her out when, all of a sudden, she appeared on the shore of a Florida key. ROCKFORD REGISTER STAR/Will move on national wire, too. EARLY PRIMARY: The primary election in Illinois is Feb. 5, a month early. We'll look at the implications of the early primary for candidates, political parties and voters. On the one hand, the early primary is designed to make Illinois a player in the presidential primary contest, and this could drive up voter turnout. On the other hand, harsh weather could suppress voter turnout. Meanwhile, candidates may have difficulty getting attention and raising money during the holiday season, which almost immediately precedes the election. CHAMBERS/LACROSS/ROCKFORD (with map)
LINCOLN'S SQUARE INCH: Four acres of land near the Lincoln log cabin state historic site have been sold by Ray Phipps to a Rockford company called friends of the Abraham Lincoln historical farm. Don't know who they are yet, but years ago Phipps off and on marketed deeds to one square inch each of the land, which for a while actually was owned by Abe himself. MORE BAD LUCK: A Connecticut couple whose house has been hit by cars three times can now add their car to the list of damaged property. NORWICH. On wire now / East and Conn.
MILTON LESBIAN: A 9-year-old girl says she's been beat up (by 6 boys and girls), pushed around and otherwise harassed because her mother is a lesbian. The family talks about their ordeal (the girl has switched schools), and how they're dealing with the school system to address it. The school says it's overblown, as school comm. members cede it should be looked into more.

FLAWLESS FARLEY PICKS: In case you haven't heard, the most bizarre injury to this point in the NFL season wasn't the concussion Miami Dolphins quarterback Trent Green suffered last Sunday while throwing a low (but legal) block that caught Houston Texans defensive tackle Travis Johnson square on the knee - a sequence that led to a scene straight out of professional wrestling, with Johnson standing over Green, berating the motionless quarterback before he was strapped onto a stretcher and wheeled off the field. JULES MOLENDA COLUMN: In case you have forgotten or didn't know, Christopher Columbus and his tiny fleet spotted an island in the Caribbean (which island, no one knows for sure) about 2 a.m. on Oct. 12, 1492. It's easy to mislay this bit of historic data because, for the past 35 years, the powers that be have been moving the holiday each year so that bankers, government workers, teachers and students can enjoy a three-day weekend. This year, as you remember, the Columbus Day holiday occurred last Monday. LAKE SUN / in / columns

FRANK MEZZAGLIA: Political rules of ethics needed. Behind the shades of their differences, politicians have one thing in common - they want to win. That common thread can be found in both political parties. Candidates and their handlers don't mind getting their hands dirty in the process. We saw it all unravel just this past week. On wire now / Mass. Opinions and Opinion Columnists
BOB TREMBLAY: One would assume the party responsible for starting a war based on erroneous information would have absolutely no chance of winning the upcoming presidential election. But Republicans could win the White House in 2008. On wire now / Mass. Opinions and Opinion Columnists
OPED: There are no guarantees in health care, but there is one controllable factor related to hospital care that can affect everything from a good stay to staying alive. The Registered Nurse at your bedside is the only person on a hospital clinical team who is solely accountable, both ethically and legally, for your health and safety every minute of every hour you are in the hospital.
