Red Sox fan who took a beating in N.Y. rewarded

This time, his team pride is being rewarded.

The Red Sox are giving a Quincy man who was beat up for being a Red Sox fan in Yankee territory some souvenirs and a ticket to a game next year.

Red Sox media relations director John Blake said a member of the organization who lives in New York delivered the souvenirs on Sunday.

''We did it as soon as we heard about it,'' Blake said.

Carlos Ortez, 25, was watching the Red Sox-Angels playoff game at a hotel in Yonkers on Wednesday night when another bar patron asked him and his friend about their allegiance to the Red Sox. Ortez was later jumped in the hotel parking lot.

He suffered facial fractures and spent several nights at Westchester Medical Center. He was not listed as a patient at the hospital as of Sunday afternoon.

Police said Duane Somers, 32, and Edward McConaughey, 42, both of Pennsylvania, were arrested at the hotel shortly after the beating and were charged with second-degree felony assault.

Ortez was in New York working as a carpenter on a Manhattan hotel. He works for Woodmeister Master Builders in Holden.
