New CPR guidelines ‘a good twist'

The panicked look on the speedboat driver's face made vacationing Teree Rice drop her textbook and run toward Florida's intracoastal waterway. Slumped between the seat and the steering wheel was a lifeless man, his face already blue.

"Both of us struggled to get that dead weight on land. Someone had called 911," recalled Rice, a registered nurse, now heart-failure coordinator at Mercy Heart Center. "I immediately started CPR and his color started coming back. Then the squad came and took him. I didn't know the guy's name, so I went back to studying this stuff for advanced life support."
