Bus mistakenly drops off Frankfort-Schuyler students a mile from their homes

Bus routes are back to normal in the Frankfort-Schuyler Central School District after an incident that left several elementary students about a mile from their homes last Thursday, according to district Superintendent Robert Reina.

The students were dropped off after the second day of school by a driver for Birnie Bus Services at the intersection of Daily and Dutch Hill roads due to what was described as a "communication problem."

The students were dropped off at their homes on Wednesday, but Reina says on Thursday one of the terminal managers for Birnie Bus got confused as to what the bus routes were and that's how the incident occurred.

"The whole situation has been dealt with internally by Birnie Bus," Reina said.

The driver on Thursday is no longer driving for the district, Reina added.

A representative for Birnie Bus could not be reached for comment prior to press time.

A new driver has been assigned to the route and no other incidents have occurred. Reina says that district transportation coordinator Karen Wasilewski rode the bus with the new driver Friday and Monday to make sure the driver knew all the stops and the kids names to avoid the problem from happening again.

Reina says he has been closely monitoring the routes to ensure things are going the way they should.

"I've been all around the district observing some of the routes," Reina said. "I've been watching pick-ups and drop-offs and determined things are going OK."

In addition, Wasilewski has been riding different routes each day to make sure drivers know what they are doing and there is no more confusion.

Reina added that all athletic bus trips, BOCES bus trips, and special education bus trips have been going fine.

"We don't anticipate anything else going wrong," Reina said.

This is the first year Frankfort-Schuyler has had a contract with Birnie Bus. Last year First Student provided transportation for the district.
