RED SOX 67 SERIES/DAY 3
MAIN: Billy Rohr set the tone for '67 in perhaps the greatest debut ever by a major league pitcher. In his first game, at Yankee Stadium in April, Rohr lost a no-hit bid with two outs in the ninth inning on Elston Howard's single to RF. Oddly, Rohr beat the Yankees again in his next start and then won only one more game in his career. From his home in Palm Springs, Calif., he reflects on his legendary cameo and reveals that he hated baseball after quiting the game in 1972.
SIDEBAR: Pitcher Lee Stange was there in '67, but he also was there in 1984 when Roger Clemens broke into the majors. Stange, the Sox's pitching coach that year, talks about his memories of a very young Rocket. As a bonus, it was Stange who earlier had suggested that the Red Sox sign Luis Tiant, which turned out to be a pretty smart move.
