Indians manger gets 3-year extension

Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro says baseball is seldom black-and-white, that decisions are most often made in the context of a gray area.

When some Indians fans look at Eric Wedge, they see a manager who has never taken his team to the postseason. When Shapiro looks at Wedge -- even through the graying filter of that unenviable bottom line -- he still sees the right man for the job.

"He's a guy who has maximized the talent on this team," Shapiro said Monday while announcing a three-year contract extension for Wedge through 2010. "He's gotten the most out of our players. No one knows the challenges we have here as well. No one knows the players as well. No one is going to work harder. No one cares more."
