David Otten: You can take the teeth out of your stress

Stress is a common concern; it can be detrimental to one's health, mental state and spiritual life, yet stress can also have positive results, such as pushing you forward to complete a job. Stress can be managed whether you are a Christian or not. Stress management classes, both Christian and non-Christian, will have several similarities, but I believe the Christian has resources available to them that non-Christians do not. Note the following stress reducers:

Elizabeth Woodworth: Forgo the straw to minimize littering

The summer solstice occurs on June 21. (Always hate to see come, it means that the days are going to get shorter and winter is on the way. I hate dark!) The Sun is entering the Middle Summer sign of Cancer at the same time. The moon enters its weak second quarter today, favorable for vacations and outing of all kinds, because it minimizes lunar stress. Strawberry season ends at average elevations along the 40th Parallel while domestic red raspberries and wild black one ripen. The June 23 high-pressure system is typically cool, and it's often followed by some of the sunniest and driest days of all the year. The wheat harvest begins in the lower Midwest, bright orange butterfly weed reaches full bloom, and acorns become fully formed. In the upcoming six to seven weeks, of Middle Summer, approximately an hour is lost from the day's length along the 40th Parallel, and the year turns toward autumn. After Summer Solstice, the percentage of totally sunny days is the highest of the year through out the nation. (Countryside)

Cris Corzine-McCloskey: Blessed are the broken and the screw-ups!

I don't think there is any greater miracle than a stubborn, prideful person bending his/her knee to God. Luckily, with my job, that's a miracle I see on a regular basis. Why? I am the one people come to when they have run their lives off into a ditch. It's funny how a colossal blunder makes us aware of our need for God.

Matters of faith: We can have a glorious future in Jesus Christ

During his first Roman imprisonment, the Apostle Paul wrote a letter to the Church at Colossae. In that letter he said, "We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. "Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and growing -- as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth." (Col. 1:3-7 ESV).

Plan to put in the last of the hot-weather vegetables, like tomatoes, squash, eggplant and peppers under the new moon. Combined with the new moon, today's lunar perigee increases the possibility for chilly weather and mid-June precipitation. Adding to the effects of new Moon and perigee, a cool front is expected to cross the Mississippi between June 13 and 16, and it is likely to be a stormy weather system. Lilies are blooming and deer love them. Wild water plants transposed to your garden pond can provide beauty. Thistles go to seed as corn borers eat the corn and early soybean bloom. (Countryside)

Community, Miners gearing up for Marion Day on June 29

MARION -- One of Marion's most popular businesses over the last decade-plus -- the Southern Illinois Miners -- are off to a 16-11 start this summer and stand only one-half game out of first place in the West Division of the Frontier League behind the River City Rascals. On Friday, June 29, it will be "Marion Community Day" at Rent One Park. With the Chamber of Commerce taking the lead, the city expects to be well represented with both businesses and residents taking part in the festive occasion.

Nancy Lambert: Sign up now for 4-H robotics class, or take a chocolate factory tour

The Saline County 4-H Management Committee will hold a business meeting at 8 p.m. Monday, June 18, at the Extension office. All committee members and other interested adults and youth are encouraged to attend. Committee members include one adult representative from each 4-H Club and the current Saline County 4-H Federation officers. We will be discussing and finalizing plans for our 2018 Saline County 4-H shows.
