Movement for 51st state holds meeting Jan. 18 in Belleville
New Illinois Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to splitting Chicago away from the rest of Illinois, will host an informational meeting from noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Adam's Auctions & Real Estate, 1550 E. State Route 15, in Belleville. The doors will open at 11 a.m., the event starts at noon.

Chester basketball team has memorable night at SIU game
The Chester High School boys basketball team made its annual pilgrimage to SIU Carbondale on Jan. 7 where they watched the Salukis beat Valparaiso in a Missouri Valley Conference battle. Chester Coach Brad Norman, his coaching staff, and his entire basketball program made the trip. In addition to an exciting game, Chester freshman basketball coach, Cody Mileur, was selected from the crowd to compete in the 3-point shot challenge -- and won; while another Chester coach, Jacob Cowan, demonstrated the most spirit in the Banterra Center to win a free Papa John's pizza. The entire Chester contingent had a great time.

Popeye Trail statues to get their own QR codes
The Chester City Council opened 2020 with news that the city's Beautification/Tourism Committee will buy QR codes for all the Popeye Character Trail statues. The codes will allow visitors to use their smartphones to access additional interesting information about each statue. The cost for the codes will be $600.

Chester boys basketball: Carterville wins, 50-43, over Jackets
A cold shooting day for the Yellow Jackets and a hot day for Carterville's top scorer led to a 7-point loss for Chester in a nonconference game Jan. 11 at home.

Chester boys basketball: Yellow Jackets buzz by Ziegler; fall to state-ranked Pinckneyville
The Chester Yellow Jacket boys opened 2020 with a good win at Black Diamond Conference opponent Ziegler, on Jan. 3. CHS buzzed by the Tornadoes, 54-36, to improve to 3-1 in conference play.

Eaglefest coming in February
The annual 2020 Eagle Fest event will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1 at the Jerry F. Costello Lock & Dam in Modoc. Come watch for eagles with spotting scopes and meet some feathered friends from the World Bird Sanctuary. Tours of the lock and dam will be available. The event is free, and families and leash-trained dogs are welcome. Watch for more details closer to the event. CHS Class of 2020 boasts nine Illinois State Scholars
Nine Chester High School seniors have been named Illinois State Scholars. The nine are Amira Al-Jassim, Adeline Blechle, Jessica Handel, Zach Houghlan, Ashtyn Jany, Alyssa Place, Jaci South, Lauryn Vasquez and Destiny Williams.

Lady Jackets win 2020 LJMWC; Destiny Williams breaks CHS scoring record
The Chester Lady Jackets came in seeded first and met expectations, winning the 14th Annual Lady Jackets Mid-Winter Classic Basketball Tournament last weekend. Led by tournament MVP, Destiny Williams, the Lady Jackets were able to turn the tables on Marissa-Coulterville in the championship game 49-30. Marissa-Coulterville beat Chester last month in the Lebanon tournament and also beat them in last year's Lady Jackets tournament championship game.

Lady Jackets take 5th at Lebanon Tournament; Destiny Williams named to All Tournament Team
The Chester Lady Jackets went 3-1 in the Lebanon holiday tournament, good enough for 5th place among 16 tough teams.
