Six thousand pounds of ground pork donated to food bank
Six thousand pounds of ground pork were donated to the St. Louis Area Foodbank last week at the Cohen Recreation Complex in Chester. The food was a gift from Illinois Pork Producers Association, the Illinois Corn Marketing Board and the Illinois Soybean Association Checkoff Program. It is among the 55,000 pounds of ground pork that is being donated to nine regional food banks in Illinois in November and December, all part of the Pork Power: Partnering to Fight Hunger in Illinois campaign.

Chester High School garden certified as a wildlife habitat
The Chester High School garden habitat has been named a Certified Wildlife Habitat, an oasis on school grounds that supports birds, butterflies, bees, frogs and other local wildlife.

First United Methodist donates blankets to police, fire departments
The First United Methodist Church in Chester made a donation of approximately 50 blankets to Chester first responders on Nov. 25. The presentation was made during the regular morning worship service with Chester police officers Jeff Hammel and Joe Crain accepting the blankets on behalf of the departments.

Hornets keep Can Trophy for 3rd year; but nobody loses
Once again, two Catholic schools in Randolph County went head to head to earn the coveted Can Trophy for collecting the most canned goods during the month of November. The 2018 contest was won by the St. John's Hornets of Red Bud for the third consecutive year, in a squeaker over the St. Mary's Hawks of Chester.

Applications available for 'Cops & Kids At Christmas' program
The deadline for applications to be part of this year's Cops and Kids at Christmas program is Dec. 11. Every year, the Chester Police Department, Steeleville Police Department and the Randolph Country Sheriff's Office host the program, in partnership with the Chester Walmart.

Meet Santa at the Boat Club on Saturday
The Chester Boat Club and Chester Chamber of Commerce are pleased to again host visits with Santa this Saturday, Dec. 8. As part of Christmas on the River, Santa will arrive by barge at the Chester Riverfront at 10 a.m., welcomed with Christmas music by the Chester High School Band.
