Woodridge teen killed crossing street

A Woodridge teenager was struck and killed by a vehicle at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday as she was crossing 75th Street at Woodridge Drive.

Kathryn Ortiz, 19, of Slayton Lane, was in the crosswalk, according to witness testimony to police, when she was hit by an eastbound vehicle, police said.

Ortiz was walking with a friend at the time, according to police.

She was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove by the Lisle-Woodridge Fire District. The DuPage County coroner's office pronounced her dead at 7:24 p.m., according to a coroner's office spokeswoman.

Ortiz is a 2005 graduate of Downers Grove South High School. She worked at the IKEA in Bolingbrook.

Police received a call about the accident at 6:38 p.m.

Traffic on eastbound 75th Street from Route 53 to Janes Avenue was diverted from the time police arrived to about 10 p.m., said Carrie Noe, spokeswoman for the Woodridge Police Department.

Police conducted an accident reconstruction Thursday night, Noe said.

The driver of the vehicle stopped immediately, she said. She said that "at this point" there is no indication of drug or alcohol impairment by the driver, who was not cited.

Noe said that according to witness statements, "the driver had the right of way."

"At this point, it looks like a very tragic, unfortunate accident," she said.
