School board accepts resignation of President Dean West

The Harrisburg school board approved the resignation of board President Dean West during Tuesday night's regular meeting to the board.

West was not present at the meeting. A letter to the editor from Martin Rowe published in the newspaper June 5 indicated West had proposed Rowe as a candidate to fill the board seat that became available when Matt Winkleman resigned from the board. The board interviewed Rowe along with other candidates and the majority of the board voted for Jeffrey Drake to fill the seat. Rowe's letter stated West submitted his resignation from the board the following day.

On Tuesday the board announced that applications to fill West's vacant seat must be filed at the Central Office, 403 Main St., Harrisburg by noon Tuesday, July 2. A special meeting of the School Board will be held 6 p.m. July 9 at the Harrisburg Middle School to interview qualified applicants and to appoint West's replacement.

The board approved the purchase of a 2013 Dodge Caravan SE for $18,960 from Jim Hayes Inc. The van will replace an older vehicle used for driver's education. The purchase was made with no trade-in.

The board also approved a bid in the amount of $79,145 from Kamm Services, St. Louis for asbestos removal at the high school. Bids on window removal were tabled because of a lack of bids.

In other matters the board:

Approved the hiring of Lisa Schiff as records nurse for the district.

Approved Heather Cox as the high school volleyball coach and Jake Stewart as Assistant High School Softball Coach.

Appointed volunteer boys high school soccer coaches: Head coach, Mike Stewart; assistant coaches, Mike Butler, Larry Henke and Rick Daugherty. Girls volunteer high school soccer coaches were also named. They are Jason Butler and Mike Stewart.

The meeting adjourned after a public hearing drew no public comments on revisions to the 2012-13 school budget.
