Neighbor asks Big Dawg Disposal for some consideration

A dispute involving a Maple Street neighbor of the nearby North Hickory Street Big Dawg Disposal Co. may have already been resolved.

Resident Jerry Morgan approached the Du Quoin City Council at Monday night's meeting and complained that the company has been leaving large dumpsters with not only construction debris on its lot, but also trash and garbage and that, at times, the stench is too much to take. He wants those dumpsters moved inside their building.

The disposal company is housed in what decades ago was the Riggio beer distributing building on North Hickory Street. Mayor Guy Alongi told Morgan that health officer Ron Darnell spoke to a representative about the problem last week and he hopes it has already been resolved.

The short council meeting was marked by the first of a new series of monthly treasurer's reports, the result of work by City Clerk Andrew Croessman and City Treasurer Stephanie Cravens. The first report will be detailed in Wednesday's edition in a story called "Du Quoin by the Numbers."

The council also approved the purchase of a new snow plow for the street department and approved two charitable roadblocks for the VFW and Perry County Humane Society.

Mayor Alongi said an Indianapolis, Ind. company is going to submit a bid for repairs or a liner installation at the Du Quoin pool. Woodmen of the World financial organization and the Du Quoin Elks are partnering on fundraisers for the repairs.

Mayor Alongi hopes for pool renovations this year, but said given the work last summer repairs could wait one more year.

He also expressed his appreciation to Bill Asbury for hosting the recent Special Olympics tournament in Du Quoin and congratulated Sam and Jana Kuhnert as they are named 2015 Outstanding Citizens of the Year at Wednesday night's annual Du Quoin Chamber banquet.
