Lamb and meat goat weigh-ins Saturday

Weekly column by Saline County 4-H Program Coordinator Nancy Lambert

The Saline County 4-H lamb and meat goat weigh-ins will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 29, at Saline County Fairgrounds. 4-H members enrolled in market sheep or market meat goat projects, who want to participate in the Saline County 4-H rate of gain contests for those species, must plan to attend.

Market sheep and market meat goat projects will be weighed in for the 4-H rate of gain contests. These animals, along with beef and swine projects, are weighed out during fair week in July. The exhibitor of the animal of each species with the greatest daily weight increase will receive a traveling trophy, presented prior to the start of the 4-H livestock auction in July.

For those who do not want to participate in the rate of gain contests, market entries for lambs and goats are due in to the Extension office 10 days after the weigh-in on Tuesday, May 9.

4-H Federation to meet May 1

The Saline County 4-H Federation will meet at 5 p.m. Monday, May 1, at the Extension office. Those in attendance will be finalizing plans for summer workshops and discussing soda and concession sales at the July 4-H shows.

All 4-H Federation officers and delegates, as well as any other Saline County 4-H members and adult volunteers, are encouraged to attend. See you there!

Dog obedience classes to begin May 2

Attention all 4-H dog exhibitors. Saline County 4-H dog obedience, showmanship and agility classes will begin Tuesday, May 2. Classes will be conducted behind instructor Cheri White's shop at 613 W. Elm St. in Harrisburg. Classes will continue every Tuesday for 11 weeks, concluding on Tuesday, July 18, with the Saline County 4-H dog agility show at 7 p.m. at White's arena. The remaining portions of the 4-H dog show (obedience, showmanship and dog care) along with cat care, will be at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 20, at the fairgrounds.

On May 2, first-year exhibitors should arrive by 6 p.m. for an introduction to the course. Please bring your dog's shot records, but leave your dog at home. Exhibitors attending classes for their second year or more should arrive by 7 p.m. with their dogs and shot records.

Classes are free for 4-H youth. If you have questions about these classes, please call White at 618-926-0787.

Stockmen's Association youth rabbit show and clinic

The Saline County Stockmen's Association annual youth rabbit show and clinic is scheduled for Saturday, May 6, at Saline County Fairgrounds. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., followed by the clinic and show at 10 a.m.

This show is open to all youth, ages 8-19, and classes will be determined based on the number of entries. Awards will be given for the top three places in each class and for best of show.

There is no entry fee, and each class will pay at least three places. This is a clinic, so bring your questions for the judge.

For Saline County 4-H rabbit exhibitors, this is your opportunity to have your rabbits tattooed for the July 4-H rabbit show. Exhibitors are reminded that rabbit entries and their identifying tattoo numbers must be reported to the Extension office on the yellow livestock registration form before May 15.
