Nearly 200 Chicago public schools on a year-round calendar have started classes.

Basketball star and Chicago-area native Dwyane Wade of the Miami Heat welcomed students Monday at one school on the South Side along with Chicago Public Schools chief executive Ron Huberman.

Chicago Public Schools officials say 63 more schools are on year-round schedules this year for a total of nearly 200 schools. That's up from 18 year-round schools in 2007. Chicago Public Schools serves more than 670 schools citywide.

Huberman says the goal of year-round classes is to "keep students engaged in learning throughout the year."

The first day of classes for students at traditional calendar schools is Sept. 7.
