Harrisburg duo leads Carmi Legion team to win

Harrisburg High School alum Kyle Hall pitched Carmi to its first American Legion baseball victory of the season Sunday, a 5-3 win over visiting Carrier Mills.

Hall went all seven innings, struck out five, walked three and allowed six hits to salvage one game out of four over the weekend for Post 224.

Fellow Harrisburg native Logan Leveritt hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to break a three-all stalemate and give Hall the win.

On Saturday, Carmi fell twice to Evansville (Ind.) Funkhouser at the University of Southern Indiana diamond, 14-1 and 12-7.

On Sunday, Carrier Mills won the opening game of a District 24 twinbill, 19-2.Manager Pat Stewart’s Carmi team is now 1-9 overall (1-4 D24).

Hall helped himself with the bat in Sunday’s nightcap, scoring the first run of the game on a wild pitch after tripling to lead off the second.  Leveritt doubled and scored on an error following an infield single by Logan Rogers in the third.

After a solo homer by Carrier Mills in the fourth, Carmi got another run in the fifth on an infield single by Trent Thompson, an error, a wild pitch and a groundout by Rogers.

Carrier Mills scored twice in the top of the seventh to tie the game at three, but Leveritt’s two-out, two-run homer ended the game.  David Hunt had singled with one out, but was forced at second on Nash McVey’s fielder’s choice. Cameron Gunter pinch-ran for McVey and scored on Leveritt’s bomb to left.

Carrier Mills 19, Carmi 2

Rogers, McVey and Gunter each had two hits and Camden Stewart one, but Carmi mustered only two runs in Sunday’s opening game, a 19-2 loss.

Rogers was 2-for-3 with a double and a solo homer, McVey 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI, and Gunter 2-for-2 with a double.

Timmy Steed took the loss on the mound.

Funkhouser 12, Carmi 7

Carmi out-hit the Hoosier team 13-10 in Saturday’s second game, but committed three fielding errors in a 12-7 loss.

Trenton Veach and McVey each went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Rogers and Jade Money each 2-for-3. Steed added a triple and two RBIs, C. Stewart a triple, Hunt a single and an RBI, Leveritt a double and Hall a single.

Hunt suffered the loss on the hill.

Funkhouser 14, Carmi 1

Steed, Money and Veach had two hits each in Saturday’s first game, won 14-1 by Funkhouser.

Each team had eight hits.

Leveritt and C. Stewart each added a single for Post 224.  Leveritt scored Carmi’s only run and Steed drove it in.

C. Stewart was the losing pitcher.
