The 5th annual United Way of Saline County “Clothes for Kids” Jr. Golf Tournament is set for Thursday July 16th and the 3nd annual scramble will be July 17th. Both events will be held at Shawnee Hills County Club in Harrisburg.
“It has been truly amazing what we have accomplished in the five short years since the existence of this project”, says Dale Fowler of the United Way of Saline County. “Five years ago we were hoping to raise enough funds to help put new tennis shoes and clothes on a few underprivileged children in Saline County and now to date we have supplied over seven hundred and fifty children”. “And it’s all been made possible for one reason the generosity from our community”, said Fowler. “Our goal was that one day no child would have to go to school without new tennis shoes and clothes to wear and we can know say we made it happen”. “How many counties in the state or even the nation can make that statement”, Fowler said. “It is a proven fact that these children are walking into school with newfound confidence and self esteem”.
The Jr. Golf tournament is open to all boys and girls kindergarten through twelfth grades. K-4th grades will tee off at 9am and 5th-12th grades will tee off at 1pm. Entry fee is only $15.00 and each participant will be treated to a fun day of golf which will include a T-shirt and award donated by Peoples National Bank. Lunch will be provided to all in attendance and Old National Bank will be sponsoring a putting contest and giving away $25.00 prepaid visa cards to all the winners. Additionally, Wal-Mart, Kroger, and Mad Pricer will be donating bottled water and snacks.
“What makes this event special is that we will have kids participating that have never been on a course before”, says Fowler. “Keeping score is not required the kids will receive an award no matter what”. “We want the kids to have fun and learn a little about golf and that their participation will help a lot of children”, Fowler quoted. “However, for the more serious players trophies will be presented to all age groups that want to compete”.
The third annual scramble will be held the following day on Friday July 17th. When it comes to helping kids and the community everyone really steps up”, said Fowler. “It’s such a great feeling when someone contacts me and tells me they love what we are doing for the kids and asks what they can do to help.”
