'Dogs Outlast Herrin in OT
Harrisburg got all they wanted from SIRR Ohio rival Herrin as the Bulldogs escaped with a 36-35 overtime road win Thursday night.
Harrisburg (19-2, 5-0 Ohio), who came into the game ranked No. 6 in the state in class 2A according to the latest Associated Press Top 10 Girls Basketball Poll, outscored Herrin 4-3 in the OT period to pull out the victory.
The Bulldogs played in foul trouble most of the evening and managed to shoot 39 percent from the foul line, going 9-for-23.
Harrisburg got a game-high 17 points from Lydia Miller, as the senior was 6-of-8 from the field and 5-of-7 from the foul line.
Lauren McDaniel also finished in double figures for the Bulldogs, scoring 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, but managed a 2-for-10 clip from the charity stripe.
Stream Black, Summer and Essence Sanders all had two points for Harrisburg, while Lauryn Gribble and Gabby Adams each had a free throw.
Layla Wade led Herrin with 16 points as the Tigers outscored Harrisburg 19-14 in the second half to force OT.
Harrisburg opened with a 7-8 first quarter lead and led 18-13 at halftime, but the Tigers clawed back to outscore the Bulldogs 9-8 in the third period and forced OT with the game tied at 32 by outscoring the Bulldogs 10-6 in the final eight minutes.
<b>Eldorado 65, West Frankfort 39</b>
Eldorado put four players in double figures, including a game-high 23 points from Lexie Mitchell as the Eagles posted a 65-39 non-conference win over West Frankfort 65-39 Thursday night.
Lilly Mosby tacked on 12 points, while Paige Munds and Emma Wargel each tossed in 10 points to finish in double digits in the victory.
Karis Lane finished with five points, while Emilee Sigler had four points and Kylee Oglesby tossed in a free throw.
Eldorado jumped out to a 13-11 first quarter lead and outscored WF 15-4 in the second quarter to take a 28-15 lead into the locker room. Eldorado wasn't done, outscoring the Redbirds 21-5 in the third, leading 49-20, going into the game's final eight minutes.
<b>Galatia-Thompsonville 57, Pope County 49</b>
The Galatia-Thompsonville girls' basketball team improved to 8-4 overall and 5-1 in Greater Egyptian Conference play with a 57-49 win over Pope County Thursday night.
Kate Bond had a career night for the Bearcats, finishing with a double-double as she scored 36 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while finishing with four steals and one assist in the win for G-T.
Bond was 14-for-21 from the field and 5-for-7 from the foul line.
Maddie McFarland added eight points for G-T, while Jaedyn Beers and Chloe Mays each finished with four points. Bridget Taylor tacked on three points and Avery Evans tossed in two points.
G-T returns to action tonight (Tuesday) at Johnston City. The Bearcats will play at Gallatin County Thursday.
<b>Gallatin County 44, Pope County 26</b>
Audrey Jackson had a game-high 16 points, while Mackenzie Russell tossed in 11 in leading Gallatin County to 44-26 win at Pope County Saturday afternoon.
Carly Foster netted nine points for the Hawks, while Molly Newton scored six points and Gracie Sauls tossed in two points.
Amy Weaver went over the 1,000 career point mark at Pope County as the senior led the Pirates with eight points in the loss.
Keely Clay finished with five points, while K. Roe Fritch tacked on three points. Keerstin Fritch, Emma Collier, T. Taber and E. Ibata all had two points for Pope County.
