JALC men, women get season started this weekend

The John A. Logan men's and women's basketball teams will both be in action this weekend as both squads hit the road in a pair of jamborees.

The Volunteer women will be competing in the Southwestern Illinois College Jamboree in Belleville Saturday, taking on Arkansas State at 11 a.m., followed by Dyersburg State at 2 p.m. and Parkland College at 5 p.m.

The John A. Logan men, who are ranked No. 3 in the preseason by Street & Smith Magazine and boost the No. 1 JUCO player in the country in Jay Scrubb will be playing in the Vincennes Jamboree Sunday.

JALC, who went 22-5 last season, will start the day against Cuyahoga (Ohio) at 11 a.m. and then play Danville at 1 p.m. The Vols close out their day against Schoolcraft of Michigan at 3 p.m.

Harrisburg native and JALC head coach Kyle Smithpeters said the benefit of the jamborees are to get a pulse of his team's play outside their own gym floor.

"It is a good opportunity to see where we are in our season preparations," Smithpeters said. "I know our players are looking forward to playing against other teams."

The Vincennes Jamboree prepares the Vols for the fourth annual Midwest Jamboree on Sunday, Oct. 20 at the SIU Rec Center in Carbondale. The event is sponsored and hosted by John A. Logan and will feature 16 of the nation's top teams playing on three courts. There will be three games going on at all times starting at Noon.
