EHS eliminates Vienna to stay alive

It was a wire-to-wire victory for Eldorado, but more importantly, kept the Eagles' season alive as they eliminated Vienna in the play-in game of the IHSA Class 2A Anna-Jonesboro Regional Monday in Vienna.

Eldorado will now take on Harrisburg in Wednesday's semifinal game, starting at 4:30 p.m.

Bryant Byrd picked up the win on the bump as he went seven innings and allowed just five hits, while striking out 11.

Eldorado head coach Brad Drust praised his pitcher for Monday's performance. Drust, a Carterville graduate and former pitcher himself at SIU, complimented Byrd for his poise and composure.

"Bryant set the tone early in that bottom of the first inning," Drust said. "After we put up one run, he came right out and put up zero's. That's what we need out of our pitching staff, but Bryant was in control the entire time, he kept his composure and I was very proud to see that."

Bryce Davis picked up the loss for Vienna, allowed three runs on 10 hits, while striking out six and walking three.

Joe Mayberry, who went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored, put up Eldorado's first run of the game after he led off with a walk. The senior then stole second and scored a ground ball to shortstop.

In the top of the third, Mayberry scored on Byrd's single to center field and in the sixth inning, Byrd scored on Braden Unthank's single on a line drive to right field.

Byrd was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored, while Unthank was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Hunter Sizemore and Dalton White each had one hit.
