Du Quoin edges Trico in overtime

DU QUOIN - Coming off a huge win over state-ranked Pinckneyville, the Du Quoin High School boys basketball team got all it wanted from Trico but still held on for a 58-56 overtime win in a makeup game Tuesday night at Anders Gymnasium.

Josh Heape led the Indians with 20 points, half of which came in the third quarter.

Braeden Pursell added 13 points and had eight of those in the opening minutes as Du Quoin took an 18-15 lead into the second quarter.

Trico led 29-25 at halftime, then both teams played even in the third.

Du Quoin tied the game in the fourth with the help of five points from Anthony Cole and free throws from Heape, Pursell and Kadin Mays, although Mays went just 2-for-6 at the line in the frame.

But in the overtime, Mays redeemed himself with four of the six points as the Indians held on for the win.

Du Quoin is now 12-11 this season.

The Indians play at Sparta on Friday night and also travel to Anna-Jonesboro on Saturday night.

The regular season concludes on Friday, Feb. 15, with Senior Night against Nashville.
