OLNEY -- A furious rally came up just short and the John A. Logan College women's basketball team suffered its first Great Rivers Athletic Conference loss of the season Wednesday night with a 74-70 setback at Olney Central College.
Logan is now 10-4 overall and 4-1 in the GRAC, while Olney improved to 10-5 and 5-1.
Olney, which jumped out to leads of 12-4 and 22-10 in the first quarter, hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and led 37-23 at the intermission.
The Lady Knights led 56-41 going into the fourth quarter, when Logan went on a remarkable comeback.
Logan opened the frame with a 9-0 run to get within six, but still trailed 64-56 with five minutes left after Olney's Kayla Sandford hit a 3-pointer for part of her 20 points.
Alicia Hornbuckle canned a triple and Destiny Cozart went coast to coast to pull Logan within three, then Farasia Hodge scored four straight and suddenly the Lady Vols had their first lead of the game at 65-64 with 2:35 remaining.
Olney's Allie Murphy answered with a 3-pointer, however, and free throws helped Olney regain a three-point lead. But then four straight misses at the line allowed Logan to tie it at 70-all on a 3-point bomb by Skylar Miller with 22.8 seconds left.
Kimi Stokes drove the lane for a layup with 14.2 ticks remaining to put Olney back in front and Logan's Miriah Donelson missed a 3-point try going for the win. Haley Baxter iced it for the Lady Knights with 1.7 on the clock.
Cozart led all scorers with 25 points, with 20 of them coming in the second half. Hodge finished with 15, while Hornbuckle had eight and both Miller and Shaniya Whitsell had seven for the Lady Vols.
In addition to Sanford's 20 points, Stokes put in 12 and Hannah Coleman had 11 for Olney.
Logan plays at Lake Land in Mattoon on Saturday.
