Eldorado put three players in double figures and took one step closer to becoming the first team since Massac County (2014, 2015) to become back-to-back champions of the Vienna Classic with a 64-40 win over Cobden Friday night at Vienna High School.
If Eldorado (4-0) beats Vienna Saturday night, they would become the 15th team to go undefeated at the tournament. The last team to not go undefeated and still win the title was the 2002 Sesser-Valier Red Devils. In all, 18 teams since 1999 have went unbeaten at the Vienna Classic.
Braden Attebury put up a game-high 25 points for the Eagles on an 8-of-19 shooting night, where the senior forward went 2-of-8 from 3-point range and 7-of-7 from the free throw line while pulling down five rebounds.
Jon Meredith also finished in double digits for Eldorado, scoring 17 points, nine of which came in the first half and Joe Mayberry came off the bench to tack on 10 points.
Joe Brumleve led Cobden with 13 points and was the only Appleknocker to finish in double figures.
Eldorado jumped out to an 11-6 lead midway through the first quarter and was able to finish off the first stanza up 18-8. The Eagles were able to maintain the 10-point lead throughout most of the second quarter, but closed out the first half on a 6-0 run and took a 33-17 lead into the locker room.
A Jacob Traxler bucket with 4:53 to play in the third quarter put Eldorado up 44-22 as the Eagles started the second half on an 11-4 run.
Traxler scored six points in the win for Eldorado, while Ray May finished with four and Kale Oglesby added a bucket.
Galatia goes down to Century at Vienna Classic.
Galatia couldn't get the buckets to drop late in an 81-75 loss to Century Friday night.
Century led 18-17 after one quarter and took a 39-38 lead into the locker room. Galatia matched Century at 19 in the third quarter and were outscored 23-18.
Galatia senior guard Austin Stevens led all scorers with 30 points. while three other Bearcats, Ben Mitchell (19), Will Pullman (11) and Austin Pritchett (10) all finished in double figures.
Joel Glenn tacked on three points, while Braxton Lane tossed in two points.
Galatia closes out the tournament against Greater Egyptian Conference rival Carrier Mills at 5:30 p.m. Cobden and Century are slated for a 7 p.m. tip with Eldorado and Vienna to square off in the finale.
