Lady Yellow Jackets win home meet; Boys runners-up

<span style="font-weight: 400;">CHESTER -- Chester hosted its second home track meet of the season on April 18, with the Lady Yellow Jackets running away with the meet on the girls' side and the boys finishing runner-up.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The Lady Yellow Jackets accumulated 177 points to top the field of 12 teams, with Sparta finishing second with 92 points. Okawville (84), Carterville (68) and Murphysboro (60) rounded out the top five.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Sparta won the boys' division with 168 points, with Chester (117.5), Red Bud (85.5), Okawville (38) and Steeleville (30) also finishing in the top five.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">In the girls' division, Chester won seven events of 18 events and had six runner-up finishes, seven third-place finishes, three fourth-place finishes, two fifth-place finishes and four sixth-place finishes.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">"I was very pleased with how the freshmen are stepping up how all of the girls' times are dropping," said Chester girls coach Jenny Stumpe. "Overall, it was a great meet for the entire Lady Jackets team."</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Chester's Morgan Atchison and Taylor Dunning each won two events apiece. Atchison won the 100-meter hurdles (15.7) and 300-meter hurdles (47.5), while Dunning won the 3,200-meter run (12:57.5) and the 1,600-meter run (5:56.3).</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Kaitlyn Hoffman was the winner of the high jump (5-0) and Jessica Kattenbraker was the winner of the 400-meter dash (1:02.3).</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The final event winner for the Lady Yellow Jackets was the 1,600-meter-meter relay. &#160;Jessica Kattenbraker, Tayler Howie, Taylor Dunning and Morgan Atchison turned in a winning time of 4:24.6.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The Yellow Jacket boys had six wins in their side of the meet to go along with one runner-up finish, four third-place finishes, four fourth-place finishes, four fifth-place finishes and two sixth-place finishes.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">"I thought we ran really well overall," said CHS coach Ben Hunter. "We are lacking in a few areas which hurt us a bit, but overall we performed well."</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Clayton Richelman, Demontae Martin and two Yellow Jacket relays, the 400 and the 800, combined to win the six events.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Richelman won both the long jump (17-3) and the triple jump (35-10), while Martin won the 100-meter dash (11.4) and the 200-meter dash (23.3). &#160;</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The foursome of Chris Lang, Caleb Golding, Martin and Savion Smith won the 400-meter relay with a time of 45.0. Lang, Nick Heffernan, Martin and Smith won the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:35.9.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Lang finished second in the 200-meter dash (24.1).</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Chester added an additional 24 points with four third-place finishes - Zach Zappa in the 110-meter hurdles (22.9); Joey Reid in the 100-meter dash (12.6); Josh Haberberger in the 1,600-meter run (5:27.0) and Jacob Wingerter, Jacob O'Riley, Joey Reid and Nick Heffernan in the 1,600-meter relay (4:07.2).</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">The Jackets earned four fourth-place finishes - Mitchell Colonel in the 800-meter run (2:31.1); Jacob Wingerter in the 400-meter dash (59.3); Eathan Thompson in the 300-meter hurdles; and Josh Haberberger, Lance Bohnert, Colonel and Zach Zappa in the 3.200-meter relay (10:19.7).</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Both teams were to compete at the Buzz Bradley Invitational at Sparta on Friday, but the event was cancelled due to cold and rainy weather.</span>

<span style="font-weight: 400;">Next up for the Jackets will be the Black Diamond Frosh/Soph boys and girls conference meet at Hamilton County tomorrow and the Bi-County Meet on Tuesday at Chester.</span>
