The Harrisburg High School softball team had one more hit than Massac County in the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Ohio Division opener, but fell by one to the Patriots 9-8 at home.
The Bulldogs (7-4, 0-1) had 15 hits to Massac County's 14 as McKenzie Sullivan went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Lexi Williams, Essence Sanders and Gillian Jones both went 2-for-4 as Williams drove in three runs and Sanders had one. Karsyn Davis was 2-for-4 at the plate, while Abby Dalton, Alli Ferrell, Madeline Rider and Hannah Reid all had one hit. Dalton and Ferrell each had an RBI
"We didn't make enough plays defensively that we should have made and that's what it comes down to," Harrisburg head coach Red Stafford said. "We only had one error, but there were a lot of balls that should have been caught. We just had too many mental mistakes and we shouldn't be making those and it ended up costing us the ballgame."
Ferrell dropped to 5-4 on the year, taking the loss in the circle. She went the distance, but allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 14 hits, while striking out three and walking one.
Harrisburg returns to action Thursday at home when they play host to Benton at 4:30 p.m.
