Harrisburg edged by Patriots in SIRR opener

The Harrisburg High School softball team had one more hit than Massac County in the Southern Illinois River-to-River Conference Ohio Division opener, but fell by one to the Patriots 9-8 at home.<br />The Bulldogs (7-4, 0-1) had 15 hits to Massac County's 14 as McKenzie Sullivan went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Lexi Williams, Essence Sanders and Gillian Jones both went 2-for-4 as Williams drove in three runs and Sanders had one. Karsyn Davis was 2-for-4 at the plate, while Abby Dalton, Alli Ferrell, Madeline Rider and Hannah Reid all had one hit. Dalton and Ferrell each had an RBI<br />"We didn't make enough plays defensively that we should have made and that's what it comes down to," Harrisburg head coach Red Stafford said. "We only had one error, but there were a lot of balls that should have been caught. We just had too many mental mistakes and we shouldn't be making those and it ended up costing us the ballgame."<br />Ferrell dropped to 5-4 on the year, taking the loss in the circle. She went the distance, but allowed nine runs (seven earned) on 14 hits, while striking out three and walking one.<br />Harrisburg returns to action Thursday at home when they play host to Benton at 4:30 p.m.
