Girls Prep Hoops: Galatia edges Eldorado

The Galatia girls’ basketball team put three players in double figures as they earned a 54-50 win over Eldorado Monday night at Duff-Kingston Gymnasium.

Galatia (4-11) got a team-high 14 points from Kassidy Rizor, while Kennedy Harris tacked on 13 points and Mallory Mays tossed in 12 for the Bearcats.

Eldorado’s Jade Hise and her 17 points were the lone double-figure scoring for the Eagles, who’s losing streak now stands at 11 games.

Galatia jumped out to a 14-11 lead, but Eldorado was able to trim the deficit at the half, outscoring GHS 12-11 in the second quarter. The Bearcats flipped the script in the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles 11-9 and each had an 18-point output in the game’s final eight minutes.

Brittany Hutchison chipped in with six points for Galatia, while Madison Murphy finished with five and Baley Crisp tossed in four points.

For the Eagles, Scott Artman got eight points from Takiya Britton and seven points from Derian Corn. Olivia Parker finished with five, while Madison Newton and Rachel Stafford each put up four points. Zakiya Britton tacked on three points and Paige Munds had two.

“For the first time this year we came out ready to play and execute,” GHS head coach Denise Clayton said. “I think we are beginning to find out who we are as a team. We controlled our defensive boards and were able to put more pressure on them defensively. Plus, being able to have three girls in double figures and playing both in transition and in the half court was a major step for us.”

Galatia returns to action Thursday at home against Pope County, while Eldorado plays host to West Frankfort.
