Prep T&F: Record Pace

At last week's Harrisburg Invitational, the host Bulldogs barked and bit their way to a first place team finish, beating out 10 other teams.

Harrisburg took the top spot, followed by Herrin at No. 2 and Black Diamond Conference representative Fairfield was third.

Kane Carrigan had a pair of first place finishes as the Navy Academy signee threw 54-feet-1.5 in the shot put and had a toss of 164-feet in the discus.

Also grabbing a first place finish was Corbin Crim (Long Jump, 21-feet-9.25; 400 meters, 50.9), Dustin Lane (100 meters, 10.9; 200 meters, 22.7), the 4x100 meter relay team of Tylor Marler, Cody Rightnowar, Lane and Crim finished in 43.3 and the 4x200 meter relay team of Christopher Williams, Hunter Smith, Aaron Stephens and Rightnowar grabbed the first place with a time of 1:34.4.

The highlight of the day may have come from the freshmen/sophomore 4x400 relay team of Niko Neal, Chandler Bowling, Williams and Smith who set a new school record with a time of 3:36.7.

"What a great day for Harrisburg track and field," said Bulldogs head coach Zach Cox. "Not only did we come out on top with some great performances but we actually got some great weather to run in. This year has been tough in general with the conditions and also we have cancelled, been delayed, or ran in inclement weather at our invite for the last 4 or 5 years so this was nice. I can't say enough about how well our kids do with putting on a home meet. Both times this year they have really stepped up to the challenge. A couple of the other coaches from other teams even complimented how well the meet was ran."

In addition to the first place finishes, Harrisburg had a handful of second place finishes.

Kody Cavender took second in the pole vault, clearing 11-feet and setting a PR for the freshman. Neal had a time of 14.8 in the 110 high hurdles and Aiden Blades had a PR in the 800 meters, finishing at 2:05.7 for a second place finish. Rightnowar had a time of 40.8 in the 300 intermediate hurdles and the frosh/soph 4x2 relay team of Kody Cavender, Jimmy Hicks, Morris and Darnell Boone had a time of 1:41.8.

Bowling had a PR in the 400 meters, finishing with a timer of 54.8 for fifth place and Lane finished fourth in the high jump, clearing 5-feet-11, also a PR. Kyle Cavender went 10-6 in the pole vault for a PR as well.

"From a competition standpoint we had some really nice PR's today and a some other times that show me that we are very close to being in championship shape," Cox said. "The sophomore group of Niko Neal, Hunter Smith, Chandler Bowling, and Chris Williams broke our fresh/soph school record in the 4x400 with a time of 3:36.7. Both of Carrigan's marks in the throws were some of the best in the state and his best discus throw of the season so far. Crim's mark in the long jump is a solid state qualifiying mark as is both of our 110 hurdlers Neal and Marler. Dustin Lane's time in the 100 is right there and he lead our 4x100 today to one of the top times in the state again. We are very close and we cannot have any slip ups from here on out. It's been a season of ups and downs. We've had some injuries and also some are just starting to feel better. Im very excited about what we can do from here on out."
