Five questions with ... Hannah Pettijohn of Harrisburg

Q. Do you believe stronger gun control laws should be considered in light of yet another mass shooting?

Pettijohn: I agree and disagree. I believe that some gun control laws are beneficial such as (those on) assault rifles. I don't believe those should be in the hands of people without proper training for them. Other than that, I do not believe it should because at the end of the day, it doesn't matter what laws you put into effect, the criminal will still commit the crime.

Q. President Trump's approval ratings after nine months in office are lower than any other president, but southern Illinoisans were very supportive of him at the ballot box. Are they still supportive?

Pettijohn: I do think that they would still be supportive. If you are going to fully support someone, then you should do just that. Southern Illinoisans tend to be stuck in their ways, which isn't a bad thing but once an opinion is made, I feel it is likely to stay.

Q. Thanksgiving is fast approaching. What do you enjoy the most about the holiday?

Pettijohn: My favorite part of Thanksgiving is visiting with family and definitely the food. You can't go wrong with turkey and stuffing.

Q. Did you have a favorite Saturday morning cartoon when you were a kid?

Pettijohn: I woke up early every Saturday morning to watch cartoons. My favorites were "Power Rangers" and "The Suite Life of Zack and Cody."

Q. College and professional basketball have already started and high school basketball is gearing up. Do you go to games?

Pettijohn: My schedule stays pretty busy with school right now but I like to catch a game at SIC every once in awhile.
