Wayne A. Short, 71, of Arkansas City, Kan., passed away Friday, June 26, 2009, at his residence. Funeral services were scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church In Arkansas City and burial will be there.
Wayne was born and raised in Harrisburg. He was born Sept. 5, 1937, to Henry and Rosa Short. He graduated from Harrisburg Township High School in 1955 and received a bachelor of science degree in engineering from the University of Illinois in 1961.
Upon graduation, he began his career with General Electric. He married Sandra Gray Short, also from Harrisburg, in 1957 and they lived in many different locations with GE until settling in Arkansas City, Kan., in 1985. After retirement from GE he taught at Cowley College for 10 years. Wayne and Sandy belonged to the First United Methodist Church where he taught an adult Sunday School class. He organized the Habitat for Humanity chapter there and worked on all nine homes. Wayne served on the city commission for four years and was mayor for one. He belonged to Rotary and received the Paul Harris Award in 1999. He was proud of the community and served in community service on many boards.
Wayne was devoted husband, father, and "Pop" to his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Sandy; son, Wayne Jr. and his wife, Susan; daughter, Cyndy Short Wellborn and her husband, Bill; daughter, Elisabeth Short Smith and her husband, Randy; son, Jeff and his wife, Donna of Ridgway; and son, Jonathan and his wife, Maureen. There are four grandchildren and four stepgrandchildren. Wayne had two brothers, James and John, and three sisters, Lola Short Nixson, Shirley Short McGhee and Jean Short Lasher.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Rosa Short; and brother, Alford.
Memorials have been established with the First United Methodist Church and Habitat for Humanity, both of Arkansas City, Kan. Arrangements are under the direction of Rindt Erdman Funeral Home.
