Houston Smith

</element><element id="paragraph-1" type="body"><![CDATA[Houston Smith, 97, Harrisburg, passed away at 1:30 a.m. Friday, April 29, 2011, at Fountainview Nursing Home, Eldorado.

He was born on June 27, 1913, in Powderly, Ky., to the late Bridges and Hazel (Wester) Smith. He married Helen G. Pelhank in 1943, and she survives at Fountainview Nursing Home.

Houston was a Navy World War II veteran, serving as a Seabee in Okinawa and Newfoundland. He was a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenter and Joiners of America Local 638. He was a member of McKinley Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and chairman of the deacons for a time.

Surviving family members include his wife, Helen Smith; son, James H. (Cathy) Smith of Harrisburg; two grandchildren, Damon T. (Meredith) Smith of Washougal, Wash., and Chase (Donny) Kelley of Evansville, Ind.; two great-grandchildren, Avery and Wesley Kelley; and a stepgrandchild, Michael Harmon, child of Cathy, of Shawneetown; and two great-stepgrandchildren, Robbie and Andrew Harmon of Bartelso.

Houston was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters; and one brother.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2011, at Reed Funeral Chapel in Harrisburg. Burial will follow in Sunset Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2011, at Reed Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to McKinley Avenue Baptist Church Building Fund.
