Shane Penley of Johnston City

JOHNSTON CITY - Shane J. Penley, 33, of Johnston City, died at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, July 25, 2019 at Crossroads Community Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

Shane was born on May 2, 1986 in Marion to Steven L. Sr. and Sheri L. (Downey) Penley.

He was an independent and hardworking young man. He was a giving person who was always willing to go the extra mile for others. He volunteered his time assisting the Special Olympics when he was younger. He enjoyed all sports and was on the football and wrestling teams throughout high school.

Shane was an excellent carpenter who loved helping his parents and building things. He would take a stack of wood and turn it into something fantastic. He believed in family first and was a free spirit who loved a good joke and loved to laugh. He was special in many ways. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his parents, Steven Lee Sr. and Sheri Lee Penley of Johnston City; brother, Steven Lee Penley Jr., of Marion; sister, Donna Janine Cross, of Johnston City; nephews Devan Shane Miller of Ironton, Missouri and Austin Lee Penley of Johnston City; niece Emalie Sky Arbuckle of Johnston City; great-niece Halsie Reign Miller of Ironton, Missouri; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents and uncle.

The funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday, July 31 at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion. Minister Jerimey DeLauder will officiate. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Marion.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 30 and from 9 a.m. until time of service, Wednesday at Mitchell-Hughes Funeral Home in Marion.

Memorial donations to the family are suggested, and will be accepted at the funeral home, at 800 N. Market St., Marion.
