Marilyn Mae Burklow, 79, whose life was focused on family, community and teaching children’s music, lost her two-year battle with cancer Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012.
The heart and soul of her family, she will also be remembered as a champion of community volunteering.
Mrs. Burklow, an elementary and middle school teacher of music in Harrisburg Community Unit District No. 3 for 23 years, taught her students to understand and love music, as well as to perform well. Although she retired from classroom teaching in 1994, she continued to teach private voice and piano until her illness intervened.
A graduate of Harrisburg High School, she received her bachelor’s degree in music education from Murray State University (Kentucky). She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma, an NPC sorority and Sigma Alpha Lota, an organization that promotes interaction among those who share a commitment to music.
Active in the community, Mrs. Burklow was a member and officer of the Harrisburg Education Association and served on the governing board of the Southeastern Illinois College Cultural Arts Series. She was also a member of the Harrisburg Garden Club, the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.), the Friends of the Library and the Illinois Music Educators Association (IMEA).
For a number of years Ms. Burklow served as the choir director in her home church, Harrisburg First United Methodist Church.
Marilyn and Curtis C. Burklow, who grew up across the street from each other in Harrisburg, were married Sept. 20, 1953.
In addition to her husband, Curtis, Marilyn is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Lynn (Burklow) Black and son-in-law Randall Black of Murray, Ky.; son, Bradley Curtis Burklow and daughter-in-law DeAnna Burklow of Paducah, Ky.; and five grandchildren: Megan (Black) Belcher and husband Michael of Murray, Ky., Bradley Black of Louisville, Ky., Madison and Morgan Burklow of Harrisburg and Austin Burklow of Paducah, Ky.
Preceding her in death were her parents, Edwin J. and Ida Mae (Etling) Thompson; and her sister, Janet (Thompson) Reid.
Visitation will be at Reed Funeral Chapel from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, 2012, with the celebration of life service at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at Harrisburg First United Methodist Church, 122 W. Poplar St., the Rev. Christine Cunningham and the Rev. George Schmink officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Lawn.
In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested that memorials contributions be designated for Hospice of Southern Illinois or the Harrisburg First United Methodist Church’s Music Ministry.
