Certification of needy flood victims for assistance to WPA employment or through relief provided through township supervisors and the Illinois Emergency Relief Commission began Saturday throughout 10 area counties.</li>

The rate of recession of floodwater in Harrisburg on Saturday was increasing gradually during the past 12 hours. The water dropped about 5 inches. Arrangements have been completed for the importation of 100 Saline County WPA workmen who are to be brought into the city to assist in rehabilitation of water and sanitation facilities. A number of residents have found it possible to re-enter their homes and begin the work of cleaning up.</li>

Union services will be held again Sunday by the Protestant churches of Harrisburg on the island morning and evening. The morning service will be at the Presbyterian Church and the evening service at the Methodist Church.</li>

On McKinley Avenue where most of the passenger traffic from the south side to the island is handled, National Guard boats on Friday transported 3,727 passengers. Passengers who relied on private boats to haul them were not included in the count.</li>

The National Guard commander stationed here yesterday made an airplane reconnaissance flight over the flood area that includes Golconda, Cave-In-Rock, Shawneetown, New Haven, Rosiclare, Elizabethtown, Ridgway, Eldorado and Harrisburg. He said the loss from the flood probably is greatest in Harrisburg but Shawneetown appears to have suffered heaviest. Buildings throughout the Gallatin County seat are afloat.</li>

About 200,000 sandbags are protecting the shafts of Peabody No. 43 mine from floodwater.</li>
