Illinois State Police troopers will be out in force over the holiday weekend as part of the Operation CARE -- Combined Accident Reduction Effort -- campaign.
The emphasis program will begin Friday and end Sunday, according to a news release from District 19 Commander Capt. Richard Kinter.
Troopers will concentrate on violations most likely to contribute to traffic crashes and serious injuries, including what are commonly known as the "fatal five:" DUI, speeding, failure to wear a seat belt, following too closely and improper traffic lane usage.
Special attention will also be given to violators of Scott's Law, which requires motorists to slow down, proceed with caution and move over when safe to do so, when approaching a stationary emergency vehicle with its lights activated.
About 39 percent of all traffic fatalities in Illinois occur in speed-related crashes, according to the news release. Half of all people killed are not properly buckled in a seat belt.
