Mayor Valerie Rose Mitchell and incoming mayor Eric Gregg met Monday to make sure Gregg is up to speed on what is happening with rising waters in and around the city.

"Mayor Mitchell and I have talked several times," Gregg said.

On Sunday, Gregg went to the pump stations, Gaskins City and Brookstone Estates to see what is happening. He also was briefed by city department superintendents on the situation.

"We're on top of it," Gregg said.

During the 2008 flood, Mitchell said she planned to keep a pair of waterproof boots in her car during her tenure as mayor. The boots are still there - she offered them to Gregg, but he wears a larger size.

On a more serious note, Mitchell said every city employee, from Sunday until the weather situation is over, is on flood control duty.

Mitchell also praised Flood Control and Water Department Superintendent Raymond Gunning for his handling of the situation. Gunning spent the past weekend staying on top of the weather situation and preparing for any problems that may arise in the wake of the torrential rains.

"Raymond Gunning is my new hero," Mitchell said.
