A building on Oak Street in Carrier Mills is causing a major headache for village board members, who have spent much of their last two meetings discussing possible condemnation of the structure.

Village Attorney Fred Turner filed a motion in court last month to have the building condemned, and the motion is set for hearing Jan. 27 in Saline County Circuit Court.

The owner of the building, Bobby Stone, was present at Tuesday’s meeting, along with a relative, John Padgett, who spoke to the board about the issue. According to Padgett, Stone is capable of making the needed repairs to the building if given enough time.

“Let him have some time and you'll see a change,” said Padgett.

After the board entered a closed session to discuss the building condemnation and various personnel matters, board member Tracy Felty made a motion to give Stone until Tuesday, Jan. 24, to form a detailed plan and timeline for repairing the building and to have the plan certified by an architect or engineer. The board voted unanimously in favor of the motion.

If Stone does not follow through with forming a plan for repairs and provide evidence he can execute the repairs to the building, the village will continue with the condemnation and eventual demolition of the building.

During the meeting:
-The board voted unanimously in favor of hiring Todd Crabb as a part-time temporary street and alley worker.
-The board discussed a recent change in Internet service in Carrier Mills that disrupted service to much of the community. Shawneelink sold its Carrier Mills service to Frontier, after giving only around five days notice of the change to people using Shawneelink. Many people were without Internet service for several days.
-The board approved the $550 cost of having a police radar gun repaired.
