Eight potential mentors attended the orientation, according to an e-mail message from Emily Hookham, program coordinator. The program brings together mentors and children and youth.
"It was a good group of people genuinely interested in helping out a child," Hookham said in the message.
The mentoring organization, based in Franklin County, is looking to expand into Saline County. Mentors 4 Kids was founded after Big Brothers/Big Sisters stopped supporting its local organizations in rural areas.
Local organizers include clinical psychologist Mike Handwerk, Harrisburg Education Association President Gabe Angelly, Judge Todd Lambert, Eldorado Guidance Counselor JoAnna Lane, Herb Klickner of the Chamber of Commerce, Egyptian Health Department chief executive officer Angie Hampton, Marsha Oliboni of Harrisburg Medical Center and Michael Tison of Raymond James Financial Services.
