Harrisburg Police arrested a rural Harrisburg man accused of stealing a box of tea and leading police on a foot chase in the area of the town levee.

Police arrested Michael Waide Shelby, 25, 4555 state Route 34 South, Harrisburg, 4:45 p.m. Dec. 12 on charges of theft, aggravated battery and two counts of resisting/obstructing police. He remains held at the Saline County Detention Center awaiting a court appearance.

Harrisburg Police Officer Sgt. Todd Cavender said Kroger security chased Shelby from Kroger property after detecting Shelby had committed a theft. Shelby ran from the property to the Arrowhead Point Shopping Center where he hid in Rural King for about two hours, Cavender said.

Harrisburg Officer Nathan Moore was in Rural King viewing video on a separate case. The Rural King manager had been alerted to Shelby's presence somewhere in the store. The manager spotted Shelby, Shelby shoved the manager out of his way and ran to an area behind the Harrisburg Truss Company and the levee with Moore and other officers in pursuit, Cavender said.

Moore and other officers commanded Shelby to stop and he did not.

After searching the area, Shelby came out of a woodlot where Officer Bobby Ragsdale happened to be standing and Shelby laid down to let Ragsdale apprehend him, Cavender said.
