Charles Rayburn Ryan, 41, of Harrisburg, made his first appearance in court before Judge Walden Morris Wednesday morning. Ryan has been charged with two counts of first degree murder in connection with the Dec. 23 stabbing death of his stepfather, Carl L. Crouch, 59, of Harrisburg.
Morris advised Ryan of his rights before reading the charges to him. Morris said the two Class M felonies with which Ryan is charged could carry sentences of up to 60 years, along with fines of up to $25,000 and three years of mandatory supervised release.
Ryan was arrested by Illinois State Police investigator Bryan Harms at 7:45 a.m. Dec. 24 following a 4 a.m. interview. Crouch was found dead in the home the two men shared at 1304 W. Barnett St. at 9 p.m. Dec. 23. He had suffered several stab wounds.
According to Crouch's obituary by the Keeling Family Funeral Home in Paducah, Ken., Crouch was an army veteran and is survived by his wife, Donna McElrath Crouch, along with several stepchildren and siblings. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home in Paducah.
Morris appointed public defender Lowell Tison to represent Ryan in court. Ryan's preliminary hearing will be held Jan 19 at 1 p.m. He remains held at the Saline County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash bond.
