After being closed for more than a month due to near-record floodwaters on the Ohio River, the Cave-In-Rock Ferry resumed service at about 2:30 p.m., today, according to Keith Todd, spokesman for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
The ferry was forced to halt operations about 7 p.m. April 17 when the Shawneetown gauge showed a reading of about 41 feet, putting floodwaters over the Kentucky Landing at the end of KY 91 near the 11 mile marker in Crittenden County, Ky.
The ferry operator indicated this was the longest period the ferry has been closed by floodwaters in recent memory. The Cave-In-Rock Ferry is open and operating on a normal service schedule at this time.
The Cave-In-Rock Ferry connects KY 91 with Illinois state Route 1 across the Ohio River between Crittenden County, Ky, and Hardin County.
The ferry normally operates from 6 a.m. to 9:40 p.m. central time, seven days a week. The ferry carries about 500 vehicles across the Ohio River in an average day.
The Cave-In-Rock Ferry is operated by an independent contractor with joint funding from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Illinois Department of Transportation through a ferry authority.
