National Guard to leave Shawneetown 5 p.m. Thursday

The Ohio River at Old Shawneetown at 11:30 a.m. today was 52.36 on the automatic gauge, flood stage is 33 feet.

A slow fall is still forecasted for the Ohio River at Old Shawneetown and projections still do not have it below 50 feet before the end of the week.

While the waters are slowly receding, thoughts of clean up are already being discussed.

Anyone that has flood damage, may register at the Gallatin County, County Clerk’s Office in Shawneetown. There is a one page form that needs to be filled out. People may contact the office at 269-3025.

The Illinois National Guard will stand down their mission 5 p.m. Thursday.

Gallatin County EMA is conducting damage assessments with Illinois Emergency Management Agency and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Donations including cleaning supplies, may be made to the Ohio Valley General Baptist Church in Shawneetown, 188 E. Church St., Shawneetown 62984 or the Salvation Army in Harrisburg, 10 West Locust, Harrisburg 62946.

The Egyptian Health Department is providing information on clean up. Anyone who will be working in flooded areas, even after the flood waters have gone down, are urged to get a tetanus shot, before going into these areas.

As flood waters recede, roads will not be re-opened until they are inspected. Motorist who drive around barricades are subject to tickets.

Free clothes are available at the American Legion in Shawneetown from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and at the Equality Municipal Building during working hours.

A Red Cross shelter is open at the First Baptist Church in Shawneetown and will remain open as long as there is a need.

Heat and Humidity are big concerns this week. Be sure to remain hydrated if working in or around flood waters.
