HARRISBURG -- Heaven's Kitchen-Harrisburg, the weekly community dinner available to all each Tuesday night, is planning to expand and is asking the community for support.
Heaven's Kitchen, an outreach program of the Fowler Bonan Foundation, opened its doors Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2018, providing free evening meals in downtown Harrisburg at the First Presbyterian Church Annex. More than 10,000 people have been served since, and an average of 175 people a week dined at Heaven's Kitchen in 2019, according to Fowler-Bonan Executive Director Kerry Camp.
"We see and assist families and folks with a lot more than just food insecurity," Camp, who helps oversee the mission, said. "We're here to listen, share, encourage and be a part of someone's life. And the passion of our volunteers only seems to grow."
Camp said more than 1,000 volunteers already have assisted the program.
Heaven's Kitchen hopes to continue with program expansion, including adding more programs and services on Tuesday nights, embracing even more volunteer groups, and updating kitchen equipment and storage areas. Freezers, refrigeration, and a new exhaust system all need upgrading. Camp said while the First Presbyterian Church of Harrisburg has been most gracious with the program's use of its annex, the small church has very limited resources.
To that end, a fundraiser luncheon is set from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 23 at the annex building at 21 W. Locust St. in Harrisburg.
The menu will be chicken-fried steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, green beans, roll, dessert and drinks. Heaven's Kitchen will accept donations for the meals, and no per-plate amount has been established. Donations of any amount will be accepted. Carryouts will be available.
Camp said those who dine in will hear the music of E.T. Everett of 3 Angels Broadcasting Network.
