A 24-year-old Carbondale man has been sentenced to more than three decades in prison after shooting a fellow classmate at Carbondale Rebound High School following a robbery near the school.

State's Attorney Mike Carr says Nicholas A.M. Hastings has been sentenced to 34 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections on charges of armed robbery and aggravated battery with a firearm.

In the afternoon hours of Aug. 3, 2018, the shooting victim entered the rear driver seat of a car that his high school classmate was driving. Seated in the front passenger seat was Hastings, who turned to the victim, pointed a gun at him and demanded his property. The victim complied, but as he was attempting to exit the car, Hastings fired the gun into his side abdomen.

Hastings' prison term will be followed by three years of supervised release.
