Local veterans named to Illinois' 'Honor 200' are feted at Bicentennial party

Illinois' Bicentennial birthday party, held at Chicago's Navy Pier on Dec. 3, also included a salute to the "Honor 200," 200 Illinois veterans honored for their continued service to our state and country.

Seven residents of state Sen. Paul Schimpf's 58th Senate District are among the "Honor 200" and were honored at the celebration: Charles "Red" Becker of Evansville; Ethan Blumhorst of Carbondale; Eugene L. Holloway of Chester; John Kowalski of Scheller; John C. Preston of Red Bud; Dustin Row of Columbia; and Oscar Harrison Sanders Jr., of Anna.

Nominees were evaluated based on their achievements, and on the extent to which their contributions have aided, benefited and provided inspiration to their community at large. All nominees must have received an honorable discharge from the U.S. military and reside in Illinois.

"Tonight, we recognize some of the great contributions Illinois has made to society and the world," said Gov. Bruce Rauner at the celebration.

"The milestones featured during our 200th birthday represent opportunities to reflect on our past and understand the great assets our state has to build on for the future. We have a lot to be proud of ... and lot to build on."
