Harrisburg man dies after Sunday afternoon crash

HARRISBURG - A Harrisburg man died following a single-vehicle crash north of Harrisburg Sunday, according to an Illinois State Police District 19 report.

At about 3:54 p.m. Sunday, William W. Wasson Jr., 31, was northbound on Illinois 34 about one mile north of Harrisburg in a blue 1963 Chevrolet pickup, when for unknown reasons, the pickup left the roadway to the right.

The truck then came back onto the roadway and crossed both lanes of Illinois 34 before it struck an embankment west of the highway.

Wasson was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the truck. He was taken by Air Evac to a regional hospital, where he was pronounced dead later in the evening.

Alcohol was a factor in the crash, according to the ISP report.

ISP District was assisted by the Saline County Sheriff's Office, Harrisburg Police Department, Saline County Ambulance and Deaconess Ambulance.
