Cross Country CHS competes at Freeburg invite

Chester High School Cross Country runners turned in good times and competed well at the 2018 Freeburg Invitational Cross Country Meet in Smithton Sept. 22

The boy's race consisted of 177 runners from 27 different schools. There were a total of 20 boy's teams that qualified for team scores. The Yellowjackets sent three runners to the meet including Trent Bierman, Jordan Hughes, and Jakob Cushman.

Bierman, a junior, was Chester's top runner. Bierman finished 97th overall out of 177 competitors with his time of 18:42. Hughes, a sophomore, finished 125th with a time of 19:30. Senior Cushman finished 153rd with a time of 20:35.

Eli Ward of Waterloo was the winner of the Boy's Division with his winning time of 15:34.

Centralia won the team competition with 66 points followed by Triad (2nd, 74); Belleville East (3rd, 93); Freeburg (4th, 105); Waterloo (5th, 137); Columbia (6th, 155); Breese Mater Dei (7th, 216); Hamilton County (8th, 245); DuQuoin (9th, 252); Roxana (10th, 257) rounding out the top-10 teams.

Other team scores included Gibault (1st, 320); Marissa (12th, 346); Althoff (13th, 356); Breese Central (14th, 377); Okawville (15th, 389); Dupo (16th, 460); Salem (17th, 485); First Baptist Academy (18th, 489); Greenville (19th, 525); and Metro-East Lutheran (20th, 560). Seven schools, including Chester, could not qualify for a team score due to having less than five runners.

The girl's race included 134 runners from 22 different schools. There were a total of 15 different teams that qualified to receive a team score. The Lady Jackets had four runners compete at this event including Addie Blechle, Shea Petrowske, Amelia Schemonic, and Melody Colonel.

Addie Blechle, a junior, was Chester's first finisher. Blechle finished 87th out of the field of 134 competitors with her time of 24:32. Shea Petrowske, a senior, finished in 99th place out of 134 runners with her time of 25:18. Amelia Schemonic, a sophomore, finished 111th with her time of 26:20. Melody Colonel, a sophomore, finished 133rd with her time of 33:19.

The field of 134 runners was very competitive. All four Lady Jacket runners improved their times at the Freeburg Invite compared to their times last week. Jenna Schwartz of Waterloo was the winner of the event with her time of 17:46.

Waterloo won the Girl's Division out of the field of 15 teams with 42 points. Other team scores included Breese Mater Dei (2nd, 96); DuQuoin (3rd, 100); Triad (4th, 125); Freeburg (5th, 145)' Okawville (6th, 156); Althoff (7th, 181), Roxana (8th, 206); Breese Central (9th, 254); and Hamilton County (10th, 265) to round out the top-10 teams.

Salem finished 11th with 271 points. The final four teams included Marissa (12th, 341); Dupo (13th, 344); Columbia (14th, 356); and Metro-East (15th, 439).

The Jackets and Lady Jackets will host the 2018 Chester High School Invitational Thursday Sept. 27 at 4:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Randolph County Conservation Area at 4:30 p.m. The community is encouraged to attend to support the CHS Cross Country teams.
