Students compete in crab soccer event at CMSF

CARRIER MILLS - Students at Carrier Mills-Stonefort High School just completed their seventh PBIS event of the year. This homeroom competition was a crab soccer tournament.

Eligible students were placed on teams of six and played in a round-robin tournament. Each game lasted five minutes, with the winning team advancing to the championship bracket.

The tournament began when Motsinger's Mean Machine (freshman team), dressed in green and white, played against Lane's Lunatics (senior team), dressed in purple and gold. Freshman Gracey Aut scored the tournament's first goal in under 60 seconds.

That was followed by a goal from senior Gabe Benton to even the score. Senior Brayden Edwards scored the go-ahead goal, sending the senior class into the winner's bracket.

Game two of the tournament put DeNeal's Destroyers (sophomore team), dressed in black and orange, against Eisenhauer's Giant Killers (junior team), dressed in red and blue.

With the game tied 0-0, and only two seconds left on the clock, sophomore Mason Gilliam scored the game-winning goal to send his class one step closer to the championship game.

In the final game of round one, McDermott's Maniacs (junior team), dressed in blue and red, played against Klope's Fighting Illini (sophomore team), dressed in orange and black.

Junior Alex Maxfield scored the game's first goal to put the junior squad up 1-0. But, the combination of Rostin Lewis and Jordan Robertson was just too much for the juniors as Lewis scored two goals and Robertson scored one to send the sophomore class to the 3-1 win.

In round two, Lane's Lunatics fell to DeNeal's Destroyers, 3-1. Gabe Benton scored the only goal for the senior class, while Kyle Bristow scored two goals and Gilliam scored one for the sophomore team.

Klope's Fighting Illini then played Lane's Lunatics for a chance to advance to the championship came, where DeNeal's Destroyers were waiting.

Lewis scored two more goals and Robertson scored one to defeat the senior class, 3-1. Senior Brayden Edwards had the lone goal for the Lunatics.

In the championship game, both sophomore classes battled for the trophy, the belts, and bragging rights. Behind another goal from Robertson and one from Lewis, the Fighting Illini won the contest, 2-0.

Lewis was named Offensive MVP for the tournament with five total goals and Ethan Fitzgerald was named Defensive MVP with multiple saves at the net.

Klope's Fighting Illini squad was awarded the "Victory is Ours trophy!"
